From Hospital to Home
Sounds absolutely wonderful doesn’t it? All you’ve been wishing for, the words you have wanted to hear; ‘right then, we’re ready to send you home”. You glance upwards and silently mouth ‘thank you’, with images of sitting in your own armchair with a cup of tea watching your favourite programmes – just as it was before you became ill.
If we’re honest, going into hospital is something most of us dread. We probably know in the backs of our minds that it’s the best thing – the only thing really in the circumstances – but still we wish there was another way. Perhaps it’s a fall, it could be a recurring illness, a medical condition that doctors can no longer treat whilst you’re at home. We hear the words ‘you really do need to go into hospital’ and grimace. ‘The ambulance is on its way’ and then the journey begins. From admittance, to treatment, to recovery – perhaps rehabilitation – and then those blessed words ‘we think you’re ready to go home’.
Home – we’ve dreamt of this moment. We’ve been denied our creature comforts and now they’re in reach again. We can visualise every room in the house – our home, where we know every twist and turn, every door that makes that strange sound when you open it and every floorboard that creaks when you step on it. And ‘oh, to sleep in our own bed’. If we’re lucky, we might have family and friends nearby who have the spare time to help with our recovery. Someone to keep the fridge stocked, to manage the laundry, to check we’re taking our medication and always have the next meal planned. In most cases, we will have the services of a care provider on hand for the first few weeks but after that ……. We’re on our own!
So – is life the same as it was before our admittance into hospital?
In an ideal world, after a few weeks, we’re back into a routine and daily life has resumed as we had hoped it would. Maybe, we’re taking things a little slower and we could be walking with aids now if we’ve suffered a fall – just in case! The doctor is being kept up to date with our progress and hospital appointments become few and far between.
But we don’t live in an ideal world and, for some people, life now presents new challenges. The shops now seem to be further away and that bench in the centre of town now seems more appealing as it offers a much needed resting point for legs that are more weary than they used to be. The pots are piling up in the sink but, to be honest, it’s a bit of an effort nowadays to keep the kitchen tidy.
Please, if this is you, then give Wellbeing Homecare Services a call. We’re here to help take the pressure off you – there’s no shame in admitting that everyday life is a bit of a struggle nowadays. We can help a little or a lot. It’s up to you. Our Care Manager will visit you and you can both put together a care plan tailored purely to your needs. You just tell us exactly how we can help, whilst you keep your independence. You’ll still be at home listening to the squeaky door and the creaky floorboards, but our ladies will be on hand to help make sure that your life is as it was before you went into hospital.
We’ll make sure those words ‘we think you’re ready to go home’ really will be the best words you’ve ever heard! Before you go, meet some of the team at wellbeing. Our Team
