I think it’s fair to say that, in the main, we go through life not really thinking about the negatives that can change our ‘tomorrows’. We take daily risks without realising it – crossing a busy road, running to catch a bus, coming down the stairs carrying so much that we can’t see the steps in front of us! Sound familiar? So often we ‘thank our lucky stars’ and glance upwards silently mouthing ‘thank you’ following a near miss – and then immediately put it to the back of our minds.
Then we reach a certain age or lack of mobility and I find the one fear uppermost in our minds is that of having a fall.
We subconsciously look around for handrails when we climb stairs. We think twice when crossing the road – asking ourselves ‘if I fell halfway across, could that car stop in time?’ And ladies, most of us can honestly admit that the heels on our shoes aren’t quite as high as they were. Without being too pessimistic, a lot of us can have a fall – brush ourselves down – and get back up again. But for others, a fall can be totally life changing. Bones broken and sometimes a lengthy rehabilition process follows. Sometimes an operation is needed, a hospital stay and then physiotherapy – and then hopefully we can come back home.
This is when Care often needs to be put into place. I would say the majority of calls I take are from people looking for help for their loved ones following a fall. Before this, things were running quite smoothly, friends and family were keeping an eye on them – sometimes helping with shopping and meals – but now, with the impending return home from hospital, an extra pair of hands is needed. We all lead busy lives, many of us with jobs that keep us busy. Popping in on our way home after work may now no longer be enough. For some people, this is just the start and another fall may follow so extra care and help may be needed. Perhaps some alterations to the home may be of benefit? Hand rails for support – modifications to the bathroom maybe. So much can be put in place to make life safer but it may now be time to consider help in the home from Carers
