How do you choose the right care company for your loved one?

Carers can spend significant amounts of time with your loved one so putting a plan together and making the right decisions on who the best carers are can be daunting.  It will raise many questions.  We have put together a bit of a plan;

Start by assessing your loved ones needs and write it down.  It’s great information to share with the care giver.  Does your loved one require assistance with daily activities, medical care, companionship, or a combination of these?  If they require physical assistance for bathing and dressing, they may be eligible for Personal Independence Payments (PIP).  According to the gov.uk website (Feb 2024), PIP can help with extra living costs if you have both a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability or difficulty doing certain everyday tasks or getting around because of your condition.  Check out this link on the gov.uk website, it will give you some valuable information.

Next are a few pointers that you could consider when narrowing down your search;

Look for reputable care companies in your area. You can ask for recommendations from friends, family, healthcare professionals and check online reviews.
Research the reputation and history of potential care companies and ask about any licensing or accreditation.
Request references from current or past clients. Speaking with others who have used the care company can provide insights into their reputation and the quality of services.
Meet with the staff and ask questions about their approach to caregiving, how they match caregivers with clients, and their protocols for emergencies or unforeseen situations.
Enquire about the qualifications and training of the caregivers employed by the company. They should be properly trained and experienced in providing the level of care required.
Evaluate the services they offer against what your loved one needs.  This may include personal care, medication management, meal preparation, companionship, shopping, light housekeeping and more.
Check if the company offers flexibility in adjusting services as your loved one’s needs change.  A personalised care plan is essential for providing effective and individualised care.

No-one particularly likes talking about money but understanding the cost structure of the care services and whether they fit within your budget is crucial.  A good care company will talk to you about payment options, government assistance, or other financial information. Attendance Allowance helps with extra costs if you have a disability severe enough that you need someone to help look after you.  It offers supplementary funds for those with long-standing physical or mental conditions, regardless of the specific nature of the condition, focusing instead on its impact. Eligibility extends to individuals of State Pension age who require aid with personal care or monitoring to ensure their well-being.  Your loved one may be eligible, find out more>
